There are two types of graphite rod, blank material (unmachined graphite rod) and finished product (machined graphite rod).

 
Graphite rods are often used as electric heating elements in high-temperature vacuum furnaces. The maximum operating temperature can reach 3000°C. It is easy to oxidize at high temperatures, it can only be used in neutral or reducing atmospheres and vacuum furnace. Its thermal expansion coefficient is small, thermal conductivity is large, resistivity is (8~13)×10-6 Ω·m, easier to process than SiC, MoSi2 rod, high temperature resistance, extreme cold and extreme heat resistance, good price Cheaper.


Round carbon rod: Mainly used for root removal of welds, back slotting and removal of welding defects, etc.;  

Rectangular carbon rod: used to remove the temporary weld bead and welding scar on the component, remove the excess height of the weld and carbon arc cutting.

 

Connected carbon rod: suitable for automatic or manual welding torch, continuous feed, can reduce residual carbon rod loss during use, high precision, smooth and uniform groove, good stability and high efficiency.


1. Choose a graphite rod with good uniformity

When it needs to appear in a vacuum furnace as an electric heating element, it is necessary to select the graphite rod for the uniform red heat performance of the heating part, because the uniform red heat performance will affect the temperature distribution in the furnace and the service life. If in the process of use, due to The red heat uniformity of the graphite rod becomes worse, which will cause its fracture.


2. Pay attention to the surface temperature

Because of the nature of the graphite rod itself, the higher the temperature, the shorter the life of the graphite rod during use. Therefore, when the surface temperature of the graphite rod exceeds a certain temperature, the oxidation rate of the graphite rod will increase and its life will be shortened. Therefore, we should try not to make the surface temperature of the graphite rod too high during use.


3. There should be enough voltage adjustment margin

When the graphite rod is heated in the air, it will form a dense silicon oxide film on its surface, which becomes what we often call an anti-oxidation protective film, so when it is used intermittently, the temperature stability in the vacuum furnace must be ensured, so When a new graphite rod is used, the resistance value of the graphite rod will increase at a lower voltage.


4. Voltage after use

When a variety of graphite rods require a higher voltage in the later stage of use than the new rod, we should pay attention to the voltage in the later stage of use, and adjust it according to the way of voltage regulation or the way of wiring. Generally, the upper limit of the voltage in the later stage All have certain calculated values.

The above are the precautions for the use of graphite rods in the vacuum furnace. More matters will not be elaborated here. When the graphite rod needs to be used continuously, the voltage can be increased slowly to maintain its life.
